STUMBLING UPON THINGS
There’s nothing like finding something by accident. Researching a paper for the Film Analysis course, I stumbled upon an article about the real George Eastman.
George Eastman played by Montgomery Cliff is based in Chester Gillette. Chester, in 1906, killed his pregnant girlfriend, Grace Mae Brown, just as George killed Alice in the movie. The reasons were the same, George and Chester’s chances of high society were threatened by a pregnant girlfriend. The difference, Chester actually killed his girlfriend.
THE TRUTH, THE NOVEL, AND THE MOVIE
The movie is based on the fictional novel An American Tragedy by Theodore Dresser. The book was published in 1925 (December 27th). Approximately 35 years after the publication of the book and quite some years after the murder, Stevens took on the project of making the film. As a matter of fact, the novel and movie mirror Chester and Grace, save for the murder. In the film, it’s a fine line between through and action. In reality, it’s clear that Chester murdered Grace.
WILL THE REAL GEORGE EASTMAN STAND UP
The death of Alice Tripp in A Place in the Sun is more tragic when it’s learned it’s based on facts.
I have provided two sources for you to read about the life and death of both Grace and Chester.
